Helicopter Flight School

Helicopter Type Ratings

VVB Aviation Helicopter Type Rating

Having gained your licence, spread your wings and convert to one of our larger helicopters.

VVB is a CAA approved Flight Training Organisation (FTO) and Type Rating Training Organisation (TRTO) which allows us to train pilots to fly other types of helicopter, from a small piston to a large twin-turbine. With our team of highly experienced instructors and in-house examiners, we provide outstanding helicopter flight training.

The R44 and Bell 206 Long Ranger are unique and exciting machines, both of them different from one another. The rewards of learning to fly a different type of helicopter are tremendous each with it's own added benefits of allowing you to impress your family and friends with your newly acquired skills by taking passengers along in comfort and style. The type rating conversion course requires a minimum of 5 hours flight training. 8 hours flight training is required for your first twin rating. The time flown may also include the type-rating test. The time that you will require depends very much on your individual progress and your levels of experience.

The Course

The conversion course is designed to familiarise the pilot with the differences in aerodynamics, mechanics, technology, operation and performance, together with an understanding of the differences in emergency procedures. VVB also provide "differences" course between the Bell 206 Jet Ranger and Long Ranger, subject to the relevant Type Ratings held.
The instructor will ensure that you are ready for your test and to fly the new type safely and with confidence. You will need to take a Licence Proficiency Check (LPC) test annually on each type that you fly with one of our in-house examiners to maintain currency. Our objective is simple - to ensure that you are prepared for your test and that you are ready to fly the new aircraft type safely and with confidence.

Licence Proficiency Check (LPC)

A licence proficiency check (LPC) must be taken annually in order to maintain currency of your helicopter type rating. At VVB Aviation we have both internal and external CAA authorised examiners, and can provide you with a revalidation up to 3 months prior to LPC expiry date, or renewal of the Robinson R22, Robinson R44 & Bell 206 / 206L.

The requirement for revalidation (provided the rating is current) is to have flown two hours in the previous 12 months (including the LPC which typically lasts around 40 minutes). If the rating has lapsed then two hours must have been completed in the previous 12 months before the LPC can be taken. If you haven't managed to log the full two hours, then one of our instructors will be pleased to fly with you and complete some pre-LPC training.

We are available to conduct LPC's seven days a week and for type ratings which have expired by more than five years, we can arrange a course of training (minimum of two hours) to bring you up to the standard required to pass the LPC. In this case the type exam (multiple choice) must also be taken. To discuss your requirements please do not hesitate to contact us and we will get you booked in.
